Welcome to the
Milpitas Unified Council of PTAs

The purpose of the Milpitas Unified Council of PTAs is to facilitate information among the PTAs within Milpitas Unified School District, and to relay necessary business and information to the 6th District, State and National levels of PTA.
Local & State News
  • Parents Get Their Message on YouTube: Music video says it all. Students and local PTA members create a Youtube posting that's fun but carries a serious message about education funding in California.
First District California State PTA members in South Pasadena did just that. Click on the link above to watch students in the South Pasadena Grade "A" Jug Band perform "We Ain't Got the Do Re Mi."

The audience for the video so far has included Jack O'Connell, California Superintendent of Public Instruction. He watched it on June 3 during a visit to Arroyo Vista Elementary School in South Pasadena. "It was great," O'Connell said, who also praised the project as "creative" and "original."

California State PTA member Deb McCurdy rewrote the lyrics to "Do Re Mi," a Woody Guthrie song of 1937. The video was directed and edited by another California State PTA member, Helen Mendoza. "We wanted to produce a fun but throught-provoking video," Mendoza said. We think you'll find the video carries just the right tune and message
  • Want to provide some input on Digital Media for your kids? Go to your school's website or click this link to provide some input for the district on your kid's media use. The survey is due June 12, 2009.
  • Budget update: Voter anger sets stage for action. Here's an interesting article by the California School Boards Association on the state of the budget.
  • Take Action! - Consider Local Revenue Option: Take a look at this call for action by Assemblyman Simitian who empower local voters to invest in their schools by requiring a 55% vote to pass local parcel taxes.

President's Message

Welcome Back to School

Welcome to the Milpitas Unified Council of PTAs’ Website!

The Milpitas Unified Council of PTAs is a group of local PTAs organized under the authority of the 6th District of the California State PTA. Its purpose is to provide leadership, to serve, to assist and to act as a resource for local PTAs.

The Milpitas Unified Council of PTAs adds strength to local PTAs by enabling them to work more effectively in their schools and communities. Organized into the Council, PTAs can provide the impact of a united effort for which we are recognized.

We are governed by bylaws approved by 6th District, California and National PTA. Local PTAs join the Council as self-governing organizations, paying dues as described in the Council Bylaws. The Council is directed by the same objects and basic policies as are the National and California Congress of Parents and Teachers.

We look forward to working with you, on behalf of our children here in the Milpitas Unified School District and beyond!

Regards,

Sally Minor
2008-10 President

Meet with Your Principal
Advice: The incoming board should meet with your principal before school is out. This way you can get a feel for what the priorities are for next year, and have all summer to think about what your PTA/ PTSA would want to tackle next year.

What to do for the Summer? Try Staycations

Looking for ideas for the summer? On the KOIT (96.5 FM) website, they have a list of "Staycations: A-Z" ideas for you and your family to try out. Click the link here and Enjoy Your Summer.

Playground Grants?

miracle rec

Check this out... Miracle Recreation Equipment Company is offering $5 Million in grants for playground equipment. I don't know what the details are or even if it is a worthwhile  endeavor, but several of the schools indicated that they were working on their playgrounds, so I thought I'd provide a lead. It seems to be only a one page grant application. Check them out and let us know if it is worthwhile. Click on the link for more information.

10 Reasons to Get Involved
If you need a flyer to go with your Fall PTA packet to remind parents why they need to get involved, here's a bright colored flyer that might meet your needs.

Superintendent's Message
Dr. Black
I am very pleased to welcome you to the Milpitas Unified Council of PTA's website. I think it is terrific that the District's PTA officers and members have access to a website that is specifically designed to support their efforts in working with our students and staff. The Milpitas Unified School District is a wonderful public educational institution due in a large part to its long-standing close relationship with its PTA's. Strong PTAs are the heart and soul of successful schools and school districts. I applaud the efforts of your President, Mrs. Sally Minor and Vice President of Communications, Mr. Robert Jung in developing and designing this very user friendly website.

Karl N. Black, Ed.D.
